How to Bucket Test your Pool for Leaks

Before giving us a call, this simple water bucket test to identify if your swimming pool is leaking.

To perform the test, you will need the following materials:

  • 5-Gallon Bucket
  • Heavyweight or a Brick
  • Permanent marker or Tape

STEP 1: Place a 5-gallon bucket in the pool

Fill the bucket with water and mark the water level on the inside of the bucket with the marker or tape.

STEP 2: Place a weight inside the bucket

Place a weight inside the bucket to keep it from floating away or tipping over. Place the bucket on the first or second step of the pool, making sure that the water level in the bucket is the same as the water level in the pool.

STEP 2: Mark the water level on the outside of the bucket with the marker or tape.

Leave the bucket in the pool for 24 hours.

After 24 hours, compare the water levels on the inside and outside of the bucket. If the water level inside the bucket has gone down, but the water level in the pool has not changed, then you may have a leak in the pool. If both the water level inside the bucket and the water level in the pool have gone down, then the water loss is likely due to evaporation.

It is important to note that the water bucket test is not foolproof and may not detect small leaks. If you suspect that your pool is leaking, it is best to contact us for a more accurate diagnosis.
